| The 34th annual Russian language contest was held in Tokyo Sunday. The Japan - Eurasian Countries Association, the Russian Embassy in Japan, the Russian Foreign Center and RIA Novosti are the contest organizers. A student of Tokyo University of Foreign Languages who won the contest received a free two-way ticket to Russia. The finals saw 30 participants, including students and ordinary people studying Russian. They spoke about causes which made them study Russian, their feelings on Russia, its people and culture. Although Russian is very difficult to learn, the Japanese study it wishing 'to understand the Russian soul' and 'work for the benefit of Russia and Japan.' Unfortunately, Russian is less popular in Japan than English and French. Many people are afraid of its grammar and phonetic difficulties and vague prospects of employment. However, Russian is taught is major Japanese universities.

International forum on teaching and the status of the Russian language in EuroAsEc states will be held at the close of May in St. Petersburg, Kazinform reports.
The participants of the assembly are expected to consider situation, key and main trends to perfect state policy in sphere of the Russian language, including improvement of its prestige in the contemporary world, application of its potential as an instrument of intercultural cooperation.
Specialists will propose the ways to support teaching and studying of Russian, as native and foreign language, elevation of its status as a tool of cultural and educational policy.
Representatives of Eurasian economic commonwealth, national parliaments, education and science Ministries and outstanding scientists will participate in it.

The Russian language might become one of the factors of integration on the Eurasian space, announced Kazakh Ambassador to UNESCO, well-known Kazakh writer Olzhas Suleimenov during a press conference on the prospects of Russia's relations with Turkic republics of the former Soviet Union, held yesterday, Kazinform cites RIA Novosti.
Mr. Suleimenov expressed confidence that the Russian language would help uniting Turkic and Slavic peoples, which in the past had influenced all historically important events in Northern Eurasia.
